As a teenager I often felt insecure in this big world. Growing up in the 90’s with major changes like the rise of the internet and the fast changing climate. What impact does this current individualistic way of living have on my generation? These topics have made me think about my life and the choices I made thus far. I decided to go on a trip around the world with my boyfriend in 2019 to break away from the busy life in Western Europe.
That’s when my project ‘Under The Same Sun’ came to fruition. This personal project is about my generation (the millennials, born between 1980-2000). I started this series from a desire to get to know my own generation better.
The stops I made during my journey, range from deserted places in the deep south of America to a cramped 1920's apartment in Vienna. It shows a combination of portraits and landscapes that I intuitively find from destination to destination. In this series the journey functions as a physical starting and ending point but also as a metaphor for the dreams of the millennials.
Under the Same Sun shows a layered exploration into the identity of the millennials in different places, but more importantly, the identity of Sanne herself.
